What Are Mouth Guards For?
If you or your child plays a high-impact sport (such as boxing, football, soccer, baseball, hockey, or wrestling), we recommend a custom-made mouth guard to shield your gums, teeth, and jawbone. Similarly, many people suffer from bruxism, or grinding and clenching the teeth at night. While you may not realize you're doing this, it can cause issues, like deterioration of enamel, headaches, toothaches, neck and jaw pain, and more. At Downtown Boston Dental, we offer custom athletic and nighttime mouth guards. These high-grade mouth guards are important for the health and well-being of your mouth and are made to fit comfortably so you can play your best or get a good night's sleep. If you would like to decrease the probability of harm to your mouth, we encourage you to contact our Boston, MA office for more information about custom-made mouth guards.
Do I Need a Mouth Guard?
Custom mouth guards are helpful if you or your child plays a sport that involves high contact or if someone in your family suffers from grinding teeth at night. A mouth guard can be particularly useful if you play a high-impact sport and have dental restorations or braces since these can cut your gums and the soft tissues in your mouth. Even more, mouth guards also have been demonstrated to help in non-contact sports (jogging, yoga, weight training) by reducing tension on the jawbone. Knowing if you need a night guard can be a little trickier since many people don't realize if they are clenching or grinding their teeth when they sleep. You may need a night guard if you have:
- Headaches or migraines in the morning
- Tightness in your jaw or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain
- Facial swelling and tenderness
- Sore neck, shoulders, or back
- Flat edges on your teeth
- Loose or damaged restorations
- Receding gums
- Tooth sensitivity
- Earaches or ringing in your ears
If you think you may benefit from a mouth guard, we urge you to call our Boston, MA office so we can schedule an appointment with one of our skilled dentists to help you maintain the health and well-being of your mouth.
"This office is simply the best. They are completely professional and respectful of their patients’ time (appointments are always punctual). I also really appreciate the nonjudgmental and conservative approach to dentistry - I have never felt upsold on any additional product or service. I feel very taken care of and have recommended multiple friends to this office. Thanks y’all! Keep it up!"- H.E. / Google / Jul 15, 2021
"I have had many fillings and cleanings here. The service is always very good. The staff are on top of insurance checks/issues. They are great at confirming/rescheduling. Dr. Canesi and his techs are very gentle and patient. The fillings are done well - no issues over the past 10 years. I would highly recommend this office for people who fear going to the dentist or have special requests. Update: I’ve now been coming here for about 15 years, and I still think this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Every provider is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and talented. They are sensitive and caring. This includes the excellent administrative staff."- K.J. / Google / Jul 07, 2021

What to Expect From Mouth Guard Treatment
To create your athletic mouth guard, we will take a series of digital or physical impressions, which will be sent to a dental lab where your mouth guard will be made from high-quality, durable materials. Once completed and shipped to Downtown Boston Dental, we'll have you come in and get your guard fitted. We will ensure that your mouth guard fits correctly and feels comfortable. The process for a night guard is the same, however, your guard will be made out of a soft resin to fit comfortably at night while you sleep. We will send you home with some tips on how to care for, store, and clean your athletic or night guard so it lasts as long as possible.
Caring for Your Mouth Guard
As soon as you get your guard, it is important you add it into your routine, whether it's for sleep or sports. As important as it is to regularly use your mouth guard, taking care of it is just as important in order to preserve its lifespan. Storing your mouth guard in a safe location and washing it before and after every use are essential components of caring for your mouth guard. We will go over the ideal way to wash your mouth guard based on the substances used. You should bring it with you to each dental appointment so someone on our team can ensure it's working properly and fits correctly. If your mouth guard breaks or doesn't feel like it's fitting properly, give us a call so we can check it out.
Insurance Coverage for Mouth Guards
During your initial consultation, we will go over your options and costs for your custom mouth guard. Dental insurance can cover some of the prices so we will contact your company to find out your precise benefits and estimate your out-of-pocket expenses. Downtown Boston Dental takes several payment methods and can help you find low-interest financing.
