What is 3D Oral Imaging?
Although digital dental x-rays may be able to collect two-dimensional pictures of your teeth, 3D oral imaging provides a full 360-degree view. This state-of-the-art technology is used at Downtown Boston Dental so we can identify the full extent of potential oral health conditions or possible damage in your mouth, teeth, skull, and jaw. Not only can 3D oral imaging help us to assess any potential dental problems, but it also helps evaluate and explain what changes need to be made. 3D oral imaging allows for a quicker diagnosis, as well as more accurate treatment options. The 3D images taken can also be used to make more detailed dental implants, crowns, onlays, inlays, etc. 3D oral imaging allows us to help our Boston, MA patients make educated choices about their dental health.
"This office is simply the best. They are completely professional and respectful of their patients’ time (appointments are always punctual). I also really appreciate the nonjudgmental and conservative approach to dentistry - I have never felt upsold on any additional product or service. I feel very taken care of and have recommended multiple friends to this office. Thanks y’all! Keep it up!"- H.E. / Google / Jul 15, 2021
"I have had many fillings and cleanings here. The service is always very good. The staff are on top of insurance checks/issues. They are great at confirming/rescheduling. Dr. Canesi and his techs are very gentle and patient. The fillings are done well - no issues over the past 10 years. I would highly recommend this office for people who fear going to the dentist or have special requests. Update: I’ve now been coming here for about 15 years, and I still think this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Every provider is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and talented. They are sensitive and caring. This includes the excellent administrative staff."- K.J. / Google / Jul 07, 2021

Who Can Benefit from 3D Oral Imaging?
3D oral imaging can be used to identify a variety of dental problems for patients of any age. For children, we use oral imaging to monitor developments and changes in their oral and facial structures. It can also be utilized in orthodontics to determine if teeth are shifting and aligning as we want them to. Additionally, it enhances our ability to plan treatments by allowing our patients the very best possible alternatives for tracking and fixing problems.
What to Expect from 3D Oral Imaging
Like x-rays, 3D oral imaging is generally part of your traditional yearly dental exam. The actual procedure is very similar to having x-rays taken, but when using 3D imaging, our imaging machine will automatically move 360-degrees around your head. The whole process only takes about 20 – 40 seconds for a complete mouth view. The pictures are then uploaded to our computer system so our team can examine and determine whether you're dealing with any dental conditions that may need treatment. As the imaging process can expose individuals to radiation, women that are pregnant or breastfeeding should let us know beforehand. Additionally, kids need to reduce their exposure to radiation and only undergo 3D imaging when needed and approved by a specialist.
After 3D Oral Imaging
There's no need for a formal follow-up after receiving oral imaging, but it is strongly suggested and highly recommended that you keep biannual teeth cleanings and annual dental checkups as a part of your regular routine to keep optimal oral health. An attentive dental health regimen is also just as important, including brushing twice a day and flossing every day to help keep your teeth healthy and strong. If you would like tips and tricks on how to achieve optimal oral health at home, one of our Downtown Boston Dental team members would be happy to discuss that with you!
Insurance Coverage for 3D Oral Imaging
When used as a part of an annual or biannual oral exam or cleaning, 3D oral imaging is typically covered by many insurance companies. Our billing staff will contact your insurance provider and inform you if you will have any out-of-pocket fees not covered by insurance. We want to make your oral health as easy as possible so we do accept several payment methods and can help you choose an option that best meets your needs if needed.
