What Are Digital X-Rays?
Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are done at your annual dental exam to give us a better view of your oral health. X-rays allow our dentists to diagnose concerns that aren't visible and to learn about the health of the inside of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. There are numerous dental and oral problems that can be diagnosed with x-rays, including tooth decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, bone loss, and tooth impaction. When these problems are found in the early stages, you may have more treatment options that are less invasive. During your annual dental exam at Downtown Boston Dental, digital imaging will help our team of dentists diagnose and correct dental conditions.
"This office is simply the best. They are completely professional and respectful of their patients’ time (appointments are always punctual). I also really appreciate the nonjudgmental and conservative approach to dentistry - I have never felt upsold on any additional product or service. I feel very taken care of and have recommended multiple friends to this office. Thanks y’all! Keep it up!"- H.E. / Google / Jul 15, 2021
"I have had many fillings and cleanings here. The service is always very good. The staff are on top of insurance checks/issues. They are great at confirming/rescheduling. Dr. Canesi and his techs are very gentle and patient. The fillings are done well - no issues over the past 10 years. I would highly recommend this office for people who fear going to the dentist or have special requests. Update: I’ve now been coming here for about 15 years, and I still think this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Every provider is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and talented. They are sensitive and caring. This includes the excellent administrative staff."- K.J. / Google / Jul 07, 2021

Who Should Get Digital X-Rays?
For most, digital x-rays are a part of a standard dental examination. They can be administered as part of a preventive dental treatment plan and can also be administered if you are experiencing a specific problem. Even though digital x-rays use less radiation compared to film x-rays, Downtown Boston Dental prefers to limit the amount of exposure that is delivered to every patient. Although they are generally safe for all patients, female patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding should talk to someone from our team at the start of the dental exam so extra precautions can be taken. Digital x-rays are used to look for concerns, like:
- Decay between teeth or under restorations
- Bone loss in the jaw
- Tooth impaction
- Infected teeth
- Cysts, tumors, or abscesses
- Malpositioned tooth roots
- Delayed tooth eruption
- Orthodontic needs
- Wisdom tooth positioning
What to Expect From a Digital X-Ray
Digital x-rays are usually performed at the start of a dental exam and take about 5 – 10 minutes. Most patients will get a set of x-rays to include the needed areas. Once the x-rays are taken, they are uploaded to our computer system where they can be reviewed during your exam. From there, we can assess any areas of concern and talk about what treatments may be needed.
Following Your X-Rays
Digital x-rays will typically be performed annually at your dental exam. However, at certain visits, a full mouth set may be needed to get a more comprehensive view of your teeth, gums, and oral bones. Your x-rays will be saved with your oral health file at Downtown Boston Dental so we have it to look back on and can identify changes over time and address any areas of concern.
Insurance Coverage for X-Rays
Typically, most dental insurance plans will include and cover the cost of digital x-rays as part of an annual dental exam. Our office will contact your insurance provider to determine any costs. If you have any remaining expenses or if you are not using dental insurance, Downtown Boston Dental takes several payment methods and we are happy to help you with finding medical financing.
Digital x-rays are a useful tool that can help to diagnose and treat health problems. As part of a yearly dental exam, x-rays can give our team a better understanding of your mouth, allowing us to catch any hidden issues to be treated before they become painful. For improved dental health, contact Downtown Boston Dental in Boston, MA to make an appointment for your next dental exam with digital x-rays.
