What is Invisalign?

Well-aligned, straight teeth are more than beautiful — they're more comfortable and healthier, as well. An improper bite and crooked teeth can lead to long-term problems that can become painful and expensive to fix. This is why Downtown Boston Dental is pleased to offer advanced Invisalign — clear, removable teeth aligners for our Boston, MA patients. Custom made for your teeth and your unique needs, Invisalign is more comfortable and attractive than traditional metal braces because they can be removed to make eating and cleaning your teeth easier. If you're interested in having straighter teeth using the advanced Invisalign technology, schedule a consultation at our Boston, MA office today.

Should I Get Invisalign?

There are multiple factors that play into the alignment of your teeth: genetics, thumb-sucking as a child, missing a tooth or teeth, and even physical trauma to your face. Misaligned teeth can cause more oral health problems, including dental malocclusion (a bad bite), abnormal wear on the enamel, difficulty speaking and chewing, toothaches, and jaw pain. If we notice any of these issues during your annual dental exam, we can recommend an orthodontic procedure, like Invisalign.

Invisalign is ideal for teens and adults who would like straighter, healthier teeth without the hassle, pain, and appearance of braces. While they do need to be worn for most of the day, Invisalign trays have the benefit of being able to be taken out for eating and brushing your teeth, as well as for playing sports. Far less obvious than metal braces that cut and poke your cheeks, your family and friends will probably not even know that you're wearing your Invisalign tray, although they could also be taken out during special events.

What To Expect from Invisalign

Your first set of Invisalign aligners will be created using digital impressions that we take at Downtown Boston Dental. When they're ready, we'll have you come back so we can ensure they fit and give you instructions on wearing and cleaning your aligners. You will need to keep them in for at least 20 hours a day in order for your treatment to work — ideally, you should only take them out for eating and cleaning. Over time, you will move on to your next set of trays as they gently move your teeth closer to their proper position. We will schedule follow-ups every 4 – 6 weeks so we can check the fit of your trays and take new impressions so your next set of aligners can be made. The length of time that you use Invisalign will depend on the original position of your teeth and your cosmetic goals; however, many patients wear Invisalign trays for around one year.

Following Invisalign

Once your bite has aligned, it is crucial to stop your teeth from shifting back into their old position. Invisalign's Vivera® retainers are designed with the same comfortable materials to help keep your teeth in position after your treatment is done. Every retainer is made custom at the Invisalign dental laboratory based on digital impressions taken at Downtown Boston Dental once your treatment is complete. We will discuss with you how many hours a day you should wear your retainer, plus how to care for it once we get it from the lab. We will continue to watch the alignment of your teeth and bite during your annual dental examinations to ensure your teeth are right where they should be.

Insurance Coverage for Invisalign

For most patients, at least part of their Invisalign treatment is covered by dental insurance. Our office will determine your coverage and calculate your remaining fees. Downtown Boston Dental offers many different forms of payment if you are not using insurance. In your Invisalign consultation, we can go over your estimated costs and ways to make your treatment affordable for you, including the flexible payment plans and medical financing we accept.
