Thanks to modern technology and orthodontic advances, conventional metal braces are more comfortable and affordable than ever. Downtown Boston Dental offers our patients a wide selection of orthodontic treatments to accommodate the different wants and needs of our Boston, MA patients. Traditional braces offer a way for our patients to customize their braces that are not possible with clear aligners. This is a particularly fun way for young adults and teenagers to show their spirit. To find out more about conventional metal braces, schedule a consultation with our orthodontist, Dr. Michael J. Cognata, at our office in Boston, MA.

Should I Get Metal Braces?

Conventional metal braces are an excellent option for adults and children who need help correcting their smiles. Our traditional braces are crafted from top-grade stainless steel archwires and brackets that are strategically placed to give you the beautiful smile you desire and deserve. Traditional metal braces are an ideal treatment for our Boston, MA patients with jaw alignment problems, crowded or gapped teeth, over- or underbites, and protruding teeth. We use high-quality elastics that don't easily snap and are simple to put on. In your consultation, we will discuss your orthodontic treatment choices and help you choose the method that will best fit your needs, goals, and lifestyle.

What to Expect When Getting Metal Braces

After your initial exam, we will work together to create an individualized treatment plan for your specific needs. On the day of your appointment, your teeth will be professionally prepped and cleaned prior to getting your teeth ready for your braces. We will apply a bonding agent to your teeth, then place metal mounts on your teeth. Once all the mounts are on, we will thread the wire through them. From there, we'll put on the bands in your color(s) of choice. The small elastics keep the archwires attached to the brackets. The application process typically moves pretty quickly, and you or your child should feel little to no discomfort. You can expect to come back to Downtown Boston Dental once a month for adjustments and progress exams.

Caring for Metal Braces and Beyond

Traditional braces can make flossing and cleaning your teeth a bit challenging, which is why good oral hygiene is important to your orthodontic treatment. After your braces are put on, we will teach you how to best clean your teeth and give you helpful tips and tricks to brushing with your braces on. As a general rule, we recommend that you floss and brush your teeth after every meal. Attending all your appointments and regular dental cleanings will help you get an optimal outcome. Usually, most of our Boston, MA patients have braces for 1 – 2 years; however, your treatment period may be different, depending on your specific needs.

After your treatment is finished, we'll remove the braces and fit you for a retainer. Your retainer will keep your teeth in their location. Like with your braces, we will help you select the ideal retainer to fit your needs.

Emergencies

If you have an issue with your braces, do not panic. You might be able to fix many issues temporarily by yourself until you are able to get into our office. These problems don't need to create a delay in your treatment. If you think you cannot fix your orthodontic problem, please call us. Some common issues can be:

Loose Band or Bracket
In the event the band or bracket is still attached to the wire, then leave it in place. If it's causing discomfort, put sugarless gum or orthodontic wax on it. In some cases, you might be able to remove the elastic band using tweezers so you can detach the bracket from the archwire.
Loose Wire
Attempt to push the wire back into place using tweezers. If you are not able to, clip the wire with fingernail clippers or small wire cutters beyond the tooth that it's firmly attached to. If it's causing pain, put orthodontic wax or sugarless gum on it.
Poking Wire
Place orthodontic wax or sugarless gum on the archwire.
Soreness
You may experience some soreness for many days after each office visit. Carefully chew on sugarless gum after adjustments to reduce soreness. Rinse your mouth out with warm salt water or take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed.
Loose Appliance
In the event the appliance is poking or sticking you, put sugarless gum or orthodontic wax on it to stabilize it.
