"This office is simply the best. They are completely professional and respectful of their patients’ time (appointments are always punctual). I also really appreciate the nonjudgmental and conservative approach to dentistry - I have never felt upsold on any additional product or service. I feel very taken care of and have recommended multiple friends to this office. Thanks y’all! Keep it up!"- H.E. / Google / Jul 15, 2021
"I have had many fillings and cleanings here. The service is always very good. The staff are on top of insurance checks/issues. They are great at confirming/rescheduling. Dr. Canesi and his techs are very gentle and patient. The fillings are done well - no issues over the past 10 years. I would highly recommend this office for people who fear going to the dentist or have special requests. Update: I’ve now been coming here for about 15 years, and I still think this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Every provider is extremely professional, knowledgeable, and talented. They are sensitive and caring. This includes the excellent administrative staff."- K.J. / Google / Jul 07, 2021

Do I Need Gum Grafting?
Gum grafts are usually performed to repair gum recession caused by periodontal (gum) disease since this could cause your gumline to recede and your gums to pull back from your teeth. The exposed tooth roots may result in increased sensitivity. Common reasons that may cause gum recession are aggressive tooth brushing, using a bad brushing technique, frequent teeth grinding (bruxism) or jaw clenching, and dental misalignment. In some cases, oral piercings (lip or tongue) can irritate the gums and lead to recession. During your consultation, we will examine your gums and decide if you are a candidate for gum grafting.
What To Expect From Gum Grafting
There are different types of gum grafts that could be selected based on your specific condition. Connective tissue grafts are the most common type used to fix root exposure. This involves making an incision in the roof of your mouth (palate) to create a little flap of skin. The connective tissue is removed from within the flap and attached to your gums. A free gingival graft is similar except that more tissue is used from the roof of the mouth to build up particularly thin gums. A pedicle graft is used to remove extra tissue from your mouth to where you need coverage. During your initial consultation, we will guide you to the type of graft to meet your needs.
Recovering from Gum Grafting
Once you're sent home after your procedure, you will likely need to rest for a few days. You will also need to have a friend or family member drive you home if you were given oral or intravenous sedation. We will go over your recovery instructions, such as what to eat, what to avoid, and any prescription medications you need to take based on which grafting procedure you had done. You may feel some pain or discomfort for a while, which you may be able to minimize with cold packs and over-the-counter pain medication. To prevent damaging the grafts, you shouldn't brush or floss while your gums are healing. We will suggest what rinse to use to help keep your mouth fresh. You may need to go back for another appointment so we can track your healing and progress.
Insurance Coverage for Gum Grafting
If you have dental insurance, a member of our team will contact your insurer and verify your coverage. For out-of-pocket costs, Downtown Boston Dental accepts several payment options. During your appointment, someone from the team can discuss your estimated costs and payment options, including low-interest medical financing, to help make your procedure easier to afford.
